Maurizio Ferraris argues that digital capitalism has transformed the way wealth is produced, shifting value creation from traditional labour toward the continuous generation and circulation of data through everyday life. In the digital era, humans become a “documanity,” constantly producing digital records through consumption, interaction, and online activity. These data generate significant surplus value, currently captured by private platforms and technology companies.
Rather than rejecting technological development, Ferraris proposes extending political and social struggles into the digital sphere. His idea of digital communism aims to reclaim and redistribute the value generated by users themselves, moving beyond the traditional Welfare State and the centrality of industrial labour. As automation increasingly replaces material work, human needs and everyday life become the primary sources of value. Ferraris therefore calls for a new system based on equity, solidarity, mutualism, and the collective redistribution of digital wealth, challenging the concentration of value in the hands of major platforms.
